Stuff We Live For

As part of the Huntington Beach Pro/Am Surf Series, the Second Annual Surfrider Foundation's Celebrity Surf Jam brings toget-her top-rated professional surfers, television and movie celebrities, as well as longtime Surfrider activists for an event that's nothing like your usual H.B. surfing competition.

Hosted by surfer Pat O'Connell, E! Network's Sal Masekela and Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd, Surf Jam utilizes the National Surf League's competitive format called “The Game,” which was developed by surf legend Brad Gerlach. The Game's format takes the traditional surf competition and pairs it with elements found in team sports: coaches, quarters, substitutions and time outs.

This year's featured surfers include O'Connell, Rob Machado, Danny Fuller, Taylor Knox, Tim Curren, Jeff Deffenbaugh, Damien Hobgood and Pascal Stansfield. But if you're more into non-surf celebrities, you can, uh, ogle at Incubus, Switchfoot bassist Tim Foreman, actress/singer Minnie Driver, the stars of The N's new series Beyond the Break, Ross Thomas and David Chokacki. Plenty of Surfrider activists will also be rounding out the team—but you and I both know no one really cares about them anyway.

Surf Jam not only brings awareness to the good work done by Surfrider, but it's also an opportunity to watch celebrities totally eat it and embarrass themselves—and that's the kind of stuff we totally live for.

Second Annual Surfrider Foundation's Celebrity Surf Jam at the Huntington Beach Pier, Pacific Coast Hwy. N Main St., Huntington Beach; www.surfrider.org/surfjam. Sat., 10 a.m. Free.
