Brighten up your baleen and brush your blowhole, because for the next two weekends, Dana Point hosts its 38th annual Festival of Whales. Despite the fact that I've lived in that silly little seaport for some two decades, I have exactly zero memories of this event ever taking place (My…
Tonight sees the penultimate OC Music Awards showcase, with the shows moving to the Gypsy Lounge in Lake Forest for two free, 21+ shows (today and next Tues., natch). Opening things up at 8:30 are Honeypie, who I wrote about this past week in Locals Only. Also on the bill…

Are you sick of hearing about Ra Ra Riot yet? Y'know, the indie band from Syracuse that have been riding a crest of Vampire Weekend-esque buzz for the past few months. Well, you can stop hearing about them and actually hear them, tonight at Detroit Bar. Their record, The Rhumb…
This weekend, while your band is hot boxing in the drummers van, it might be worth while to put down the bong and see what more enterprising young rockers are doing. Chain Reaction in Anaheim is giving local acts a chance to take the main stage at the 2009 Bamboozle…
Everyone I've talked to about the OC Music Awards nominee list, released yesterday, seems to have the same reaction: Huh? Why are young, unsigned bands like The Jakes competing against veteran, internationally known acts like The Offspring, who had Billboard's #1 Hot Modern Rock Track for 11 weeks last year?…
