Cookie Hater

You were the man who decided to not simply decline my daughters' offer of Girl Scout cookies. No, you had to tell us why. You used to buy the cookies, especially the Thin Mints, you explained, but you stopped when you found out where the money was going. That was in direct conflict with your beliefs, you said. “You know what I'm talking about, right?” you asked me. I told you I didn't but thanked you for your time. But you persisted, telling me I should look into where the money goes, that I should check out a particular website.

What I didn't tell you was that I know where the money from cookie sales goes (the girls get a percentage, as does the local council and the bakery that made the cookies). But that wasn't your problem. The national organization supports partnerships with Planned Parenthood when it comes to education. There are people in leadership roles who are gay, and there are people we hold up as role models whom you likely consider radical and feminist. I don't have an issue with any of that. But when your young son comes to my door to sell his popcorn, when I tell him, “No, thank you,” please know it's because I can't support your Boy Scout. The beliefs of his family and likely his charter are in conflict with my own.
