A Taste of Fall Event Features Sustainable Menu

This Friday, 11/11/11 from 7 to 11 p.m., PositivePlate.org presents a special event featuring sustainable dishes prepared by some of our top local chefs. Haven Gastropub, Avanti Cafe, Sol Cocina, Taco Asyum, Sage, Duke's, Xanh Bistro, and Haute Cakes are those expected to serve signature small plates throughout the evening hosted by the Second Harvest Food Bank at the OC Great Park in Irvine.

Tickets to the event cost $60 each, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, Kid Healthy, and the OC Food Access Coalition.

The Positive Plate is a consultancy that helps restaurants source ingredients, use their water and energy efficiently, reduce waste, and engage their customers on awareness of their roles in the circle of resource consumption. The restaurants participating this Friday are all part of the Positive Plate program.

The evening will start with an hour of tray-passed appetizers before dinner begins, and includes a hosted bar with craft beer from The Bruery, wine, and signature cocktails. Live entertainment includes Michael Castro of American Idol, the Common Kings and Jacob Littrell, as well as local art and a silent auction.

So what's to eat? Event spokesperson Chrissy Gray sent us a partial list from two restaurants as a hint of the evening's victuals:

Haven Gastropub:
Passed appetizer:
Hiramasa crudo – sashimi grade hiramasa, ruby red grapefruit, Fresno chili pepper, pickled shallot and peppercress

Main Plate:
Porchetta di Testa: berkshire hog roulade, arugula, shaved pecorino and lemon/shallot vinaigrette

Taco Asylum:
3″ Short Rib Taco – flour tortilla, pickled red onion, salsa verde, cotija cheese, cilantro
3″ Wild Mushroom Taco (vegetarian) – herbed tortilla, mushrooms, garbanzo puree, parsley salad, fried chickpeas
Taco served with a tasting of “rice” – Israeli cous cous, cilantro, and lime
Housemade hot sauces – cayenne, red savina, & ghost chili

Attendance is limited to 200 people, allowing restaurants to prepare enough of their dishes for everyone. $60 tickets can be pre-purchased at the event organizer's site, or
purchased at the door.
