We Respond to Register Letters

On Nov. 8, Orange County Registerletter writer Charles Schwartz observed that because we are at war in Iraq and Afghanistan, different rules should apply. “We have nine Democrats running for president of the United States who are aiding our opponents, the saboteurs and terrorists by bashing President Bush. The nine are guilty of treason and should be prosecuted.” Schwartz clearly needs a history lesson. Presidential elections have been conducted in this country during wartime. If present-day Dems are guilty of treason, then perhaps we should try posthumously such seditious pols as Barry Goldwater (1964), who ran vigorously against Lyndon B. Johnson during the Vietnam War. Of course, no war was so grave a threat to national security as the Civil War, and yet Abraham Lincoln was re-elected in 1864 despite being savaged by his opponents—including one of his own generals. What's more, a presidential election took place in 1812, the same year the British torched the White House. But then Dolley Madison made ice cream for some reason, and everything was cool.
