Vibrant Plumage

North Carolina's Birds of Avalon deal with a particular strain of psychedelia, one that captures the lysergic essence of London, circa summer 1968 (you know exactly what I mean, you Pretty Thing). Listen to 2007's Bazaar Bazaar and the new Outer Upper Inner EP (both on Costa Mesa's Volcom Entertainment and produced by Mitch Easter), and soak up the blue-sunshine-drenched expressions, in which guitars stretch into unnaturally beautiful tonalities and vocals mirror mind states ranging from ecstatic to anguished. Birds of Avalon's brand of acid comes laced with sucrose, and their trip is well worth taking.
