Top Five Local EDM Shows in January

As we head into 2014 it's time to think about some music related resolutions. Maybe you didn't go to as many shows as you wished in 2013, or maybe you went to too many and want to limit your monthly outings to those worth your hard earned cash. Regardless, if you're a true music fan and you say you're over going out deep down you know that will never happen – especially an electronic dance music lover. As we wait for festival season to creep up on us, it's important to choose which events to attend wisely. We scoped out the top five local EDM shows this month from dubstep to trance to please the pallets of our growing dance music scene.

5. Passion Pit (DJ Set)
Thursday, January 30th
Yost Theater

The White Rabbit Group celebrates it's four year anniversary at their Yost Theater weekly, “Havoc Thursdays” the end of this month. Usually known for bringing electro house, dubstep, and trap to OC's 18-and-over crowd; they've stepped out of the box a bit to bring members of the indie/electronica band Passion Pit to play a DJ set. We're not expecting Michael Angelakos (the bands bi-polar lead singer) to be present, but are curious to see who will be manning the decks. With the success of their latest album Gossamer debuting at number four on the Billboard Top 200 and recently selling out Madison Square Garden, it's no question the band knows a thing or two about making a crowd dance. 10pm – 2am, 307 N. Spurgeon St., Santa Ana, CA 92701.

4. Tara Brooks B2B Jamie Schwabl
Friday, January 17th
Detroit Bar

Noise Revolt celebrates the full moon with music and art collaborations featuring Tara Brooks back to back with Jamie Schwabl at Detroit Bar. For a mere $5 cover charge, you can experience live painting, galleries, henna face painting, bass driven yoga and the tunes from these techno lovers. Expect a medley of everything deep, funky, melodic and definitely sexy from these two who have triumphed in making a living out of playing their favorite music all over So Cal and beyond. We're still buzzing from Tara's Pink Mammoth set on the Burning Man playa last summer. With opening acts from Dripping Gems, Davoid, and Jesta this is set to be a good vibes party for the 21-and-over crowd. 8pm – 2am, 843 W. 19th St., Costa Mesa, CA 92627.

3. Myon and Shane 54
Thursday, January 23rd
Sutra

Márió Égető (Mÿon) and Előd Császár (Shane 54) have been rocking dance floors for half a decade now as a duo that plays everything from trance to progressive house music and are steadily rising in super-stardom. Their track “Strangers” with Seven Lions, Demi Lavato remix for “Neon Lights,” and single “Lie to Me” with Cole Plante all made it to the top Billboard charts in 2013 with the later reaching number one at the end of last month. The first stop of their “Heartbeat North American Tour” with special guest Late Night Alumni makes it's way to Sutra January 23rd. Named after their remix of LNA's “Every Breath is Like a Heartbeat,” we can only hope Ryan Raddon (Kaskade aka the band's fourth member) makes a surprise appearance. 9pm – 2am, 1870 Harbor Blvd, Costa Mesa, CA 92627.

2. Hot Since 82
Saturday, January 11th
Avalon

The British DJ/producer Hot Since 82 had a successful year in 2013–most notably for his remix of Green Velvet's “Bigger Than Prince” which was on every tech house set list from here to Ibiza. Yet the artist born Daley Padley also accomplished releasing his 14 track album Little Black Book, which also included his remix for Green Velvet of course. The single “Shadows” featuring Alex Mills singing an entrancing R&B like hook over the deep house grooves is already set to be a 2014 hit within the underground music scene. Straight from the BPM festival he makes his way to Avaland Saturdays with opening sounds by fellow Brit Maxxi Soundsystem. Expect to get lost in the deepness of the sounds and dance until sunrise. 9:30pm – 7:00am, 1735 North Vine Street, Los Angeles, CA 90028.

1. Doctor P and Friends
Saturday, January 25th
The Observatory

Innervision Events continues their 18-and-over Bassology nights at the Observatory with label head Doctor P bringing some of his UK Circus Records crew to join in the wobbly basslines at the end of this month. Funtcase, born James Hazell, is known to smash down with that raw filthy sound, while Cookie Monsta (aka Tony Cook) gets loud and grimy playing bass heavy dubstep. Top it off with Shaun Brockurst better known by his stage name Doctor P headlining, and you can expect some old school classics like “Sweat Shop” to his 2013 track with Method Man “The Pit.” We're also really feeling his latest single which you can download for free “Shiskabob.” A can't miss night for any bass music lover for less than $40. 10:30pm, 3503 S. Harbor Blvd, Santa Ana, CA.
