Start the 2015 theater season off with a wallop. South Coast Repertory begins the new year with The Whipping Man, a “powerful and haunting” piece written by Matthew Lopez. Set in the spring of 1865, just after the end of the Civil War, we meet a wounded Jewish soldier, Caleb, as he returns home to his family’s abandoned and damaged plantation. The only two people there waiting for him are Simon and John, former slaves, now free men. As the three prepare for Passover, a landslide of racial issues, religious conflicts, societal ironies and house secrets emerge as they deal with their new way of life. Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award, as well as the Lucille Lortel and an Obie Award, The Whipping Man is a deeply dramatic, soul-searching production—don’t miss this chance to see it in our home county.
