The Glass Menagerie

A devoted but domineering matriarch Amanda Wingfield, her rebellious and soul-searching son, Tom, and his bashful, ailing sister Laura are at the heart of Tennessee Williams' character-driven classic. The play hones in on their soulful struggle for happiness while living in their tiny, shabby St. Louis apartment during the Depression. Wingfield's Southern genteel, marked by naïveté and smother, blinds her from nurturing her son's pursuit towards realizing his own ambitions. She plays on the physical and emotional fragility of her daughter, whom she knows Tom loves and adores, to guilt him into staying home, but the struggle to control everything can't last forever. One day, Tom brings home a friend, which causes Laura's glass menagerie to shatter, along with the family's illusions. Don't miss this American masterpiece now performing in Long Beach.
