The Five Must-See Shows in OC This Weekend

Don't forget to check out our constantly updated OC Concert Calendar

Friday, October 4

Maroon 5
Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
Love or hate Adam Levine and his smug television appearances (he just landed a semi-autobiographical single-camera sitcom on NBC), there's no denying Maroon 5 makes incredibly catchy, stuck-in-your-brain-all-day pop music. “Moves Like Jagger,” for example, is now ranked as one of the best-selling singles worldwide with a ticker of nearly nine million copies sold. Maroon 5 hits the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater this week on their Honda Civic tour (we sense some heavy marketing influence here), with support from the platinum-piped Kelly Clarkson. Several massive venues on their circuit have already sold out–so if hearing Maroon 5 every time you turn on the radio just ain't enough, get your tickets now. (Erin DeWitt)

Modest Mouse
The Glass House
Old Modest Mouse fans like to pit themselves against the Johnny-come-latelies (specifically, those who joined the bandwagon circa Johnny Marr's arrival), but the old rules about selling out don't apply here. While there is a certain disparity between the band's humble K Records roots and contracting the guitarist from a legendary group like the Smiths, Modest Mouse's deliciously bitter core has remained intact through the group's career. On Friday, the group plays a super intimate show at the Glass House that is not to be missed. (Chris Martins)

Melanie Martinez
The Constellation Room
Two-tone-haired beauty Melanie Martinez first captured hearts on Season 5 of the hit singing talent show The Voice with her breathy, provocative vocals covering Britney Spears and The White Stripes and charting on the Top 5 songs on iTunes twice. Not bad for the 18-year-old from Long Island; now that she's burst onto the scene, the eccentric pixie has been following up her musical legacy by writing her own songs and going on tour with her first album. Audiences, by now, are definitely addicted, so here's to looking forward to Martinez's next step. Performing tonight at the Constellation Room. (Aimee Murillo)

SoundWalk
East Village Arts District
Listening to members of FLOOD hold forth on SoundWalk, their one-night-only transformation of Long Beach's East Village Arts District into an indoor/outdoor gallery of sound-art installations, can be a bit daunting, what with their invocations of concepts such as Brecht's estrangement effect and Derrida's extension of Kant's consideration of the frame through which we consider not just art, but also life.
But there's nothing to be scared of, children, as SoundWalk is simply a big audiovisual playground in which you have four hours to freely frolic, taking the installations as you find them. Simple novelty? Deep meditation on sound as a transformative environmental factor? There's just one more chance to find out just what it can be to you, however, because SoundWalk's 10th iteration is also its last. (Greggory Moore)

Sunday, October 6

The Kyms
Proof Bar
“Pop!” goes the music played by Inland Empire band The Kyms, who also incorporate a bit of alt rock, blues and ska into their indie rock sound. Anchoring all of those elements together is Chrisol Lomeli's sexy vocals, bouncing off funky basslines and electrifying guitar. Just on the cusp of releasing an EP, The Kyms have been appearing all over SoCal from the House of Blues to Whiskey a Go-Go and playing their blend of high energy indie rock all along the way. No strangers to Orange County, this group plays tonight at Proof Bar along with Iris and Mini Bear. (Aimee Murillo)
