Yeasayer
The Observatory
Brooklyn band Yeasayer always want to push things a little further. When they started a few years ago, they seemed like they were aiming somewhere between Animal Collective and the (then just beginning) off-beat sounds of Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label artists. And now on their most recent Fragrant World, they've doubled and re-doubled their commitment to experimentalism with an album that's some unheard-of collision between M.I.A., Talking Heads and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. What's that mean to you? Big beats, melodies lifted from anywhere and everywhere, and enough sci-fi audio ambiance that you'll be looking for a James Cameron credit. They're slated to get a new album out soon, so consider this a final chance to see them as they are before yet another metamorphosis. (Chris Ziegler)

Mike Stud
The Constellation Room
Behind this up and coming hip hop artist's music is a most interesting and surprising background. Long before making it as a rapper, Stud was actually an accomplished baseball player with a bright future ahead, until an injury sidelined his career in baseball. While in recovery mode, he would dabble into making music. Fast forward to 2013 and the Rhode Island native is on tour with his new album Relief. If the name Mike Stud doesn't fascinate you, his music will; The Stud employs playful synth, minimalist beats and his own voice for a very chill, relaxed set of music. Dam Funk and Allensworth

Signed to Stone's Throw Records, Dam-Funk has been called Los Angeles' “Ambassador of Boogie Funk.” The DJ is known for mixing hypnotic electro-synth sounds with dance grooves. This week, he's teaming up with soul troupe Allensworth for a benefit show at Blackbird Records in Fullerton, with proceeds going to benefit All the Arts for All the Kids Foundation. $20 Donations are being accepted at the door and the first 100 people in the door will get a free Wahoo's fish taco and Pop Chips–and some serious funk for desert. Southern Culture on the Skids

Chances are if you came of age in the last couple of decades listening to bluesy country with a surfin' twist, you would have heard Southern Culture On The Skids. Encompassing the Southern twang of rockabilly and adding a punk attitude and surf guitar, this North Carolina band has the bluesy fever of The Cramps with the party animal vibe of The B52s. Throw in a cheeky humor about their own Southern-ness with songs like “My House Has Wheels,” “Too Much Pork For One Fork,” and “Daddy Was A Preacher But Mama Was A Go-Go Girl,” and you've got a wild rock n' roll group that's been prolific since '92. Time to welcome them back to Orange County tonight at the Constellation Room where they play with He's My Brother She's My Sister. (Aimee Murillo)

Over the years, L.A. label Stonesthrow has come to defy classification as the preeminent source for underground hip-hop. Yeah, sure, they still do that. But take a look at their catalog today, and you're sure to find as much new wave, Northern Soul and Prince-inspired funk as anything else.The proof is in the lineup of this week's Stones Throw Soul Tour review, featuring a DJ set from label boss Peanut Butter Wolf, the psychedelic funk of the Stepkids and the elastic west coast keytar sounds of Dam Funk, the horn-heavy ethereal soul of Myron and E and Southern Soleros.
