The Documentaries of William Klein

Fashion and documentary photographer William Klein burst onto the international art scene in 1956 after Vogue editor Alexander Liberman agreed to pay him $100 a week to photograph the city streets of New York. The result was a photobook milestone that's hailed as one of the most influential of its kind. Klein became a megastar, but he never lost his penchant for gritty realism, and branched into documentary filmmaking where his themes and passion took on an entirely new form. This overview series of his documentaries has included Klein’s famous fashion-industry satire, Who are You, Polly Magoo?, and Mr. Freedom starring Serge Gainsbourg. This final installment of Klein’s films showcases his examination of controversial Black Panther activist Eldridge Cleaver, as well as Klein’s capturing of some of the first cinematic pieces ever made about Muhammed Ali, Little Richard, and the Pan-African Festival. Award-winning filmmaker Steve Elkins opens the screening with remarks.
