The Agitator That Was

The entrance to the student union auditorium at Cal State Long Beach was eerily silent yesterday afternoon during the time when bullet-proof-wearing Minuteman agitator Jim Gilchrist, and his sidekick Ted Hayes were scheduled to be raising hoots and hollers for the second time in the last month (their first appearance was canceled because the Conservative Student Union, which sponsored the event, didn't come up with the cash for additional security). A pale yellow sheet hung sadly in front of the locked doors yesterday, announcing yet another cancellation. Early rumor had it that President F. King Alexander was miffed that Conservative Student Union president Jason Aula had titled the discussion: “The President's Forum on La Raza and Racism”, invoking the university president's sponsorship for the event. The campus newspaper reported today that the event was canceled because the conservative student group protested the fees being charged by the Student Union to host the event there and failed to come up with the cash again. It seems extra security wouldn't have been necessary even if the event had proceeded: members of student groups who walked out and protested vigorously during Gilchrist's visit last year had no plans to attend or protest yesterday's event. In other words, the guy is a has-been.
