Orange County Republican Party boss Scott Baugh is apparently taking diversity in politics seriously after all.
Baugh–often under fire from liberal critics for running a political party of cranky, rich, caucasian businessmen–has lured a Cuban/Irish American to be the keynote speaker at the group’s popular, annual Flag Day Salute in June: U.S. Senator Ted Cruz.
Cruz is a 42-year-old freshman senator from Texas and the nation’s current conservative golden boy largely because of his angry opposition to President Barack Obama’s post-Sandy-Hook-Elementary massacre proposals for new gun control legislation.
Local conservatives activists will surely appreciate a visit by Cruz, a Princeton and Harvard graduate who has compiled an unswerving traditional values record as a Southern Baptist with a long list of personal accomplishments.
The Canada native and self styled limited government advocate with fiery oratory skills on display in a recent hostile dialogue with California U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein will give his June 14 keynote address at the Hyatt Regency Irvine.
The Irvine Company, the county’s most powerful real estate development firm owned by Newport Beach billionaire Don Bren, and the Family Action PAC are the top sponsors of the event.
Tickets to the local Republican Party’s biggest annual fundraising soiree range in price from $150 (general seating) to $10,000 (Platinum Sponsor).
Money raised will undoubtedly be used with the goal of toppling the party’s biggest 2012 embarrassment: the historic election of Democrat Sharon Quirk Silva in a Fullerton area state Assembly seat that had been in GOP control for eons.
Although it doesn’t appear that local Democrats have finalized details, they too plan to hold their own Flag Day event on June 15 at a Teamster’s union hall in Orange.
