See No Evil?

Illustration by Bob AulI overheard you the other day in the bar of a popular Newport Beach restaurant speaking your “patriotic” mind about what a wonderful country this is and how “evil”—as you put it—those terrorists are. You mentioned unequivocally that anyone who targets innocent civilians is evil. I'd have to say I agree wholeheartedly with you, and I, too, consider what the terrorists did on Sept. 11 to be evil.

Only thing is I also happen to remember what the U.S. did to Japan in World War II. Yep, the good ol' U.S. of A. targeted innocent civilians by being the first nation ever to drop an atomic bomb—a bomb that was not unleashed on military targets but several civilian cities in Japan.

Yep, the USA nuked the homes, businesses, temples and shopping centers of normal, everyday Japanese citizens who were going about their lives as those in New York were on Sept. 11. So now that I've reminded you, are you now willing to consider the U.S. evil, too?
