Army Navy—an excellent power-pop band from LA, returns to Orange County tonight with a show at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. It's a surprisingly hip show for that venue; not trying to talk out of class or anything, but their next two shows after this are the Bacon Brothers and Stephen Pearcy of …

For those literary enthusiasts on your Christmas/Hanukkah/whatever lists—and for those people with, you know, just good taste—out there, McSweeney's online store has just announced a fantastic sale with prices slashed as high as 77% off. I just received this item on my Facebook (seriously!) feed: You feel poor. We feel poor. Let’s feel poor together. …
One thing that I've noticed since moving here is that the local TV news, the ABC affiliate at least, seems to be obsessed with “Dancing with the Stars.” Sure, it's a popular show (still?), I get that, and it's filmed in LA and our local news is from LA. I've been known to watch it …

I've long assumed that President Ronald Reagan's famous quote about Orange County–where the good Republicans go to die–was first uttered at the El Toro base, just before he launched his 1984 reelection campaign at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. Color me shocked, then, when I recently bought a December 1981 National Geographic magazine with …

Other than the Glass House shows we talked about earlier in the week, not a huge week for show announcements. But what we might lack in quantity we're making up in quality. I mean, come on, Susan Tedeschi. ] O.A.R. (pictured), Jan. 25 at the House of Blues, Anaheim On sale: 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. …
Look, I get that metal album covers are supposed to be freaky and weird and scary. That's fine. Frequently, they're also hilarious, like the cover of Cattle Decapitation's 2004 album, Humanure. ] See, the band's called Cattle Decapitation, the album is titled Humanure, the album cover is a cow pooping out human remains. It works …

Two more places put their sign up at Diamond Jamboree. First, there's Greek Islands Cuisine. If the name sounds familiar, it's because they already have a food stall at the Main Street Plaza Food Court, also in Irvine. Their new store in Diamond Jamboree will be significantly bigger. It will be a bonafide restaurant and …

Had lunch at Norm's in SanTana yesterday with Tucson resident. Frank Douglas, who writes Voice from the Desert, a blog regarding the Catholic Church's sex-abuse scandal. He was in Southern California to hold a press conference regarding a new effort by the faithful to get the Church hierarchy out of the Medieval Ages and into …

Even on Veterans Day, we find out about exciting shows coming out way. What better way to honor our military than the soothing powers of rock and/or roll? ] December Decimation, Dec. 20 at the Glass House: Another big metal show at the Glass House, featuring Winds of Plague, Sleeping Giant, Underneath the Gun and …

The Olde Ship pub is an OC Brit standby, a place probably populated more by Yanks but nevertheless popular for its booze, its fattening food, and hours of Premier League matches. Lost in the novelty of it all, however, is its surprisingly good food. I don't know who started the stereotype that the Brits don't …
Costa Mesa's Japanese Motors, are wrapping a national tour tonight with a hometown show at Detroit Bar. It's been a busy few weeks for the band, they played a CMJ showcase and were praised on Pitchfork – twice! Here's their video for “Single Fins and Safety Pins.”
From my outsider perspective, I thought Huntington Beach was primarily populated by “skate-logo-clad teens and meth-addled Nazi skins,” as Rich Kane put it in a recent post in our sister blog, Navel Gazing. So what a nice surprise when I came across Venus Infers, from HB but practitioners of a sound that alternates between dreamy …
