Life on the Veg: Breakfast at Secret Spot in Huntington Beach

Right across PCH from Sunset Beach, Secret Spot sits nestled in an inconspicuous plaza, completely obscured by a full-service car wash. Tourists speeding along on their way to Main Street thankfully miss this hidden Huntington Beach gem by miles, leaving it in peace for the locals to enjoy. Almost everything on the menu is veg-friendly or has a veg-friendly variation. From sandwiches to tacos, this wholesome establishment offers a sizable selection of “kind grub,” but nothing hits the spot like a hearty flesh-free breakfast.

If you've been riding waves since the break of dawn, the vegi-turkey N cheese omelet is the perfect way to refuel your body. In this savory dish, fluffy eggs encase generous amounts of melted cheese. Sitting on top of the omelet are chunks of tender vegetarian turkey and thick slices of avocado. The “turkey” actually tastes a bit more like bacon and is cooked so that your teeth encounter a pleasant crispiness when you chew. A dash of hot sauce accents the dish and every order comes with home-made salsa and a side of fried potatoes. At $7.50, the vegi-turkey N cheese omelet fills you up and helps give you the protein and energy necessary to support an active lifestyle… or just hits that savory spot if you're into enormous breakfasts.

If you have more of a sweet tooth in the morning, Secret Spot has got you covered with a heaping helping of their strawberry/banana pancakes. Each order comes with two awesomely fluffy pancakes broader than the circumference of your face. The batter is subtly flavored with a fresh fruit puree and cooked to golden perfection. Topped off with a mound of fresh-cut fruit, these pancakes are sure to satisfy and even come with a side of fried potatoes, even more fruit, or a cheese omelet! If you're hungry, this spread is definitely worth shelling out $8.75.

As an accompaniment to your enormous breakfast, or perhaps a light meal in itself, try tummy soother smoothie. The tummy soother is thick and blended to velvety smoothness, using just enough ice to make the drink cold. A harmonious combination of soy milk, bananas, and fresh pineapple, this 20 oz. smoothie is all natural and deliciously rich and without tartness. Soy smoothies run $5.50 each and are sweetened to your liking with organic raw honey.

Secret Spot caters predominantly to the spring and summer surf crowds, but continues to open seven days a week at 8 a.m. through the winter to reward those tough enough to brave chilly off-season waters with hot and healthy meals.
