Report: Best-Selling Video Games of Black Friday 2011

Like watching football or having a nap after stuffing yourself with turkey, Black Friday shopping has become a Thanksgiving tradition for millions of Americans. If you're a smart shopper and a gamer, there's no doubt that you've saved many of your video game purchases for the weekend following Thanksgiving, in which many of the nation's biggest retailers throw some of the most amazing sales.

Now the busiest shopping days are behind us, let's take a look at the top selling video games and consoles during this year's Black Friday.

According to amazon.com, the biggest online retailer in the world, the $100 Kinect Sensor Bundle with Kinect Adventures, Gunstringer and Fruit Ninja is the #1 selling video game/accessory sold on Black Friday.

Sony sure as hell isn't complaining though, considering that they walked away with the #2 spot with the Black Friday PS3 Bundle. Considering that purchasers get the 160GB PS3 console and two games for a measly $200, it's no wonder why the PS3 is the top selling console for this year's Black Friday.

Right behind at #3 is the Microsoft's Xbox 360, with the 4GB Console Bundle with Kinect for $200. The PlayStation Move moved up in sales to spot #18, while the PlayStation Portable saw a small sales bump at the end of its life cycle to spot #31. Perhaps it's due to market saturation or simply because no one cares about the system anymore, but Nintendo's Wii ranked at a low #282.

As reported by Analyst group Cowen and Company, the top three games sold during Black Friday and Cyber Monday are as follows:

  1. Just Dance 3 (UBI Soft, Wii)
  2. Kinect Sports Season Two (Microsoft, XBOX360)
  3. Dance Central 2 (Microsoft, XBOX360)

It shouldn't come as a surprise that the best selling games this year are casual, family-friendly games. This year, 2/3 of them are dance games, and 2/3 of them are for the Kinect. Looks like motion gaming isn't a fad after all, and that it's going to be around for quite some time.

The publishers with most games in the top 20 include Microsoft Game Studios with five games, and UBI Soft with three across all systems. Nintendo only had a single game in the top 20, with the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Another interesting tidbit is that 19 of the top 50 games are Xbox 360 games, and 12 of the top 50 games are PS3 games.

If the Black Friday Sales have proven in the past, the top games and consoles sold during this weekend will overlap with the top-selling games for the remainder of the year.
