Red

John Logan, the three-time Academy Award nominee for Hugo, Gladiator and The Aviator, made up for all those lost trophies with his Tony-winning Red. The production was nominated for a total of seven Tony Awards, ultimately taking home six, including Best Play. Red follows Mark Rothko, American abstract expressionist and “bad boy” of the art world, through two years of painting masterpieces, struggling knowing that those very works would be his undoing. After landing the largest commission in the history of modern art (creating murals for the Four Seasons restaurant), Mark works nonstop on the project with his assistant, Ken. But when Ken begins to question the painter's ideas on art theory and his integrity, things quickly unravel. Red, now playing in Long Beach, provides an authentic look at an artist’s ultimate rise and fall.

Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: Aug. 22. Continues through Sept. 15, 2013
