On Thursday nights beginning at 5 p.m., Karl Strauss Brewery brings out a cask of a special release beer and pours it for $3.50 a draft until it runs out. The brewery carries four special release beers a month and each Thursday is something different. Last night's cask featured Parrot in a Palm Tree–a Baltic Porter with an 8.5 percent alcohol content.

What makes this weekly event worth attending–besides the significant discount–is that the brewing process takes place entirely inside of the barrel, instead of with stainless steel equipment. The barrel aging process takes weeks and leaves you with an unfiltered, less carbonated and more flavorful brew.
The Parrot in a Palm Tree cask was aged for two months in San Pasqual Tawny Port wine barrels. Its chocolate and espresso flavors make this the perfect winter beer, and lucky for you, it will be available at Karl Strauss Brewery until the end of the month.
