Panel Discussion: Abstraction

Since the 1930s, Latin American art has been influenced by the idea of abstraction. There are currently three exhibitions at MOLAA following this theme (Marco Maggi’s “No Idea,” Esteban Lisa’s “Playing with Lines and Colors” and Magdalena Fernández’s “2iPM009”), and it is the topic of discussion among a select group of abstract artists (Fernández and Maggi) and expert curators (Julia P. Herzberg, Selene Preciado, Barbara Bloemink and Jorge Virgili). Moderated by MOLAA Chief Curator Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, the panel focuses on how the three exhibitions are interconnected as well as past and present abstract traditions in both Latin America and Europe—including geometric and optical abstraction, modernism and the use of technology.
