Ah, croissants. The French pastry that is oh-so-flaky and buttery. It trumps bagels and English muffins any day of the week. Of course, it gets a bad rap at places like Costco, where you can find them shrink-wrapped in bulk and assume that's how they all taste. So not true! When the craving hits, this brekkie fan makes a beeline towards SNA for the hidden storefront with swashbuckling flair and this specialty item.
If not for their matching ride out front, locating Blackmarket Bakery would be more geocaching hunt than bakery store visit. While they are well-known for sugary sweets and customized confections, I am all over their artichoke garlic croissant like bacon on fried rice.

Previous incarnations of le croissant resembled its chocolate relative; but these days, Rachel Klemek presents with a turnover-esque approach. Shape aside, our precious still reads similar to those Breyer's commercials listing all the recognizable ingredients: flour, butter, artichoke hearts, milk, roasted garlic, Asiago cheese, yeast, sugar, and salt. There is nothing like this just-baked croissant in the morning — the garlicky aroma; the delicate, chewy layers; the umami taste. An extra added bonus just for stopping by is the free cup of coffee or tea, coaxing your pastry to go down the right pipe.
Currently, their pirate booty can be located at both milk & honey and dual branches of kean coffee. If coffee breath bothers some, then the subsequent garlic breath will definitely keep pesky co-workers at bay all morning – perfect when you have a looming deadline.
