Wax On, Wax Off: Surfrider Foundation Celebrity Expression Session at Malibu Surf Association Classic

Malibu Surfing Association

Many of us here in Southern California have paddled out and done a double-take when we've seen or thought we've seen celebrities out in the water. Not just celebrities from surfing, but music and movie people,

Granted, most of these so-called sightings are probably phantom fantasies at work in the dehydrated, sun-baked brains of surfers who somehow care. But the fact is, in our often celebrity-centered, depraved, elitist OC culture, some famous people like to surf. And when they do, people notice and tell their friends. Sadly, for some of us, our communion with nature and our renegade lifestyle is strangely punctuated by the same celebrity awareness and obsession embraced by many Californians.

In any case, this fascination with celebrities who surf has not gone unnoticed by the powers that be. On Saturday, September 12th, the 4th Annual Surfrider Foundation Celebrity Expression Session will be held at First Point, Surfrider Beach in Malibu. The event has been described by Surfrider as “a great opportunity to watch top-tier [italics mine] celebrities show off their surfing skills…while demonstrating their commitment to coastal environmentalism.” Sounds a little grandiose, no? What is a “top-tier celebrity” anyway?
It's easy to be critical of celebrity culture here in SoCal. But seriously, some of the people surfing in this event are great surfers.

And if you dig someone's music or movies, perhaps it would be interesting to see them in action in this sport you share in common. More importantly, the event will serve to raise awareness and funds for the Surfrider Foundation. Some of the well-travelled faces you'll see at the event will include Flea, Jason Mraz, Eric Balfour, and Brandon Cruz. Part of the 48 year-old, 2 day-long Malibu Surfing Association Classic, the Celebrity Expression Session will go from 11am to noon on Saturday the 12th. Both events are free and open to the public. Members of the media will interview celebrities following the session. And let's face it, if there's one thing celebrities have that the rest of us surfers don't, it's lots of money. So come out and support this event, and fill your weird desire to watch famous people ride waves.
