SELBY TIGERS
THE CURSE OF THE SELBY TIGERS
HOPELESS RECORDS
A spunky garage-style group that took their name from Selby Avenue (a hip street in St. Paul, Minnesota, where members of the band live) and the Tamil Tigers (a Hindu revolutionary army in Sri Lanka that singer Nathan first thought was a sports team), the Selby Tigers could be the wild-and-crazy guys (and girl) your punk-pop evening out so sorely needs. Singer Nathan's Jello Biafra-style lisp bounces against wife Arzu D2's throaty screech, playing exuberant counterpoint on perky little couplets such as “Tie me to the moon/bless my lucky scars/the sun comes out too soon/when we shoot the stars” and “Grab the face you want to kiss/and punch me in the face with your lips.” Tag that against sharp, hysterical bursts of guitar and thumping '60s-garage-rock-style drums, make sure you keep the recording raw and add yelp-over vox (“Woo-hoo! Superbreakout!”), and you get a rocker you can file under Soundtrack to Humping—unless you're a total wuss.
