KCRW just played “Imagine.” When I first “discovered” the song as a child the melody and message — I carry around a pretty strict religious upbringing — moved me like few others. I purchased a John Lennon greatest hits CD and listened to “Imagine” many times. And then I tired of it. Even went through a misguided period where I dismissed the recording as maudlin.
Today, though, sequenced next to a clever but not particularly stirring song by some electro pop artist, “Imagine” suddenly hit me with a proper emotional jolt. Enough time had passed for me to appreciate it for what it
is, a gorgeous modern hymn for those of us who don't subscribe to organized religion and believe in things like sharing. Thanks, KCRW.
