Kreayshawn

On paper, Kreayshawn’s rhymes read like a litany of clichés. She smokes strong, has a trunk full of work, and her paper is thick. But the erstwhile femcee speaks to an underrepresented tradition of tough women in hip-hop. Like Missy Elliott and Trina before her, this NorCal export seems intent on subverting genre boundaries and sexual politics. While rap is still nowhere near gender-blind, Kreayshawn’s androgyny-flavored style helps foster a somewhat less hostile environment for lady MCs. True, her feuds with Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj and The Game threatened to dampen her portfolio, but one can’t help but be impressed with her career-as-juggling-act routine. Offstage, she’s a music video director for hire.
