John Mayer

It’s fairly common for a musician’s celebrity status to become bigger than their actual music—but, of course, that’s not necessarily a good thing. John Mayer is still plenty successful as a recording artist, but in the last few years it’s been his more ignominious achievements that have gotten him headlines—such as gaining the “womanizer” label for dating a seemingly endless stream of female celebrities, calling his relationship with Jessica Simpson “sexual napalm” (whatever that may mean), and using racial slurs in a Playboy interview. To his credit, Mayer seems resolved to keep on keepin’ on, releasing his fourth record, Battle Studies, this past November. It includes “Half of My Heart,” a duet with Taylor Swift—as clear a path to wholesomeness and mainstream acceptance as any.
