If You “Hold the Whip,” You'll Probably Say Nay to GD Bro's Red Velvet Shake

For GD Bro Burger, the same place that brought you burgers with fried mozzarella sticks squeezed between two rosy buns, Red Velvet Milkshakes are a natural addition.

Like the rest of their items, the newest member of their drink menu caters towards the joint’s knack for exhibitionism. Repurposing the ideals of fine dining and “negative space,” the milkshake comes delivered on an oversized metal tray coated in a zigzag of chocolate and red velvet cake crumbs. As I carried the frothy drink to a lone table, heads turned, and some guy gasped, “What. Is. That?” I told him it’s lunch and grab a fistful of napkins before taking a seat.

The Red Velvet Milkshake itself is inglorious food porn in a shameless mason jar-fashioned mug. At the top, there’s a large whip cream pouf studded with Oreo halves doused in more chocolate sauce and cake bits (note: there’s an envious jar of this stuff behind the counter). I did the proper thing and dipped the cookies in the whip cream before diving into the pink drink. Rather than thick and heavy, the shake has a light texture slightly thickened by the sweet crumbs blended in. If you’re going for an intense dessert fix to balance their savory burgers, you’ll be pleased with this drink’s toothsome flavor. If you’re the kind of person that skips out on the Costco cake when it’s somebody’s birthday at work, this is not for you.

The Red Velvet Milkshake was made for people that crave donuts at 2 a.m. and who think people who “hold the whip” are mad. If that sounds like you, you’ll down this frothy beast like Kool-aid in the summer.
