Hugs Not Thugs

When 23-year-old John Singleton released his debut film, Boyz N the Hood , in 1991, it immediately became a critical and audience favorite for its colorful depiction of life in South-Central Los Angeles. Coming out a year before the LA riots, the film begged for some peace and sanity in a community seemingly abandoned by civic authorities. Featuring a witty and sensitive script by Singleton and some terrific lead performances by Ice Cube, Laurence Fishburne and Cuba Gooding Jr., Boyz N the Hood remains a classic of inner-city cinema.
