Tom Fall began learning how to play instruments by ear when he picked up the guitar and drums at the young age of 10. Though he was asked to join a band, Fall declined because he was more drawn to the sounds of electronic music. At 16 years-old, the Finnish producer born Tomi Fallenius fell in love with dance music–trance, progressive and house. Fascinated by music production he taught himself the art of producing and began playing numerous DJ gigs in his hometown of Lohja. Soon after, his first and only demo “Cubic” was released as a single on Above & Beyond's Anjunadeep Records in 2010.

Since then, his career has taken off with remixes for some of the biggest names like Armin van Buuren, Cosmic Gate and W&W. With an album due out on Armin's Armada Records, Fall is quickly climbing the ranks with trance musics elite. After playing a gig last night in San Diego at Fluxx, Tom Fall makes his way back to the Yost Theater tonight as part of Transcend Fridays with opening support by local favorites A-Baum and Khoizilla. We talked to him about musicians vs DJs, his favorite shows and artist to work with so far, and where he thinks trance music is headed.
“It's easy to judge something you don't know anything about,” says Fallenius to those who don't think electronic music is a real art. “We have to write, produce and master the tracks ourselves. It's so much more work than people actually realize.” Perhaps this is why the self proclaimed perfectionist has been taking his time to produce his first full length album. A track can take him anywhere from a day to two weeks for him to finish. With the amount of remixes he's sought after to produce, headlining shows and festivals, finding the time to finish the album has been quite the challenge.
Not to mention the pressure that comes after releasing the hit “iROK” last summer which peaked at number 22 on the Beatport Progressive House Chart. “I'm really focused in the studio searching for the right track to release after 'iROK' because it was such a success for me,” he says. Feeling less self-conscious about his remixes, he reworked “Your Secret Safe” for his friends Super8 & Tab this month infusing his progressive electro charged sound with the beautiful vocals. His remix of Ben Gold & The Glass Child's “Fall With Me” also made it to number 10 on the Beatport trance chart last month.
“I think the remix I did for Armin was the most fun because it's so different from what I usually do,” says Tomi. “I've remixed a lot of trance tracks but that Gaia track with all those melodies is something I never imagined doing.” Learning from the trance God himself, Tom Fall went from obscurity to playing at Ministry of Sound in London for the first time at Armin van Buuren's infamous “A State of Trance 550” show. Thanks to his take on trance and his work on the track “J'ai Envie De Toi” Tom Fall went from up and coming producer onto everyone's radar in the dance music community.
Last time Tom Fall came to the Yost Theater in January, he showcased his ability to splice an array of EDM genres into 90 minutes almost seamlessly. Local Anjunabeats heroes Norin & Rad and Kevin Wild where in attendance and they created a friendship from the show. “Every time I come here I know the boys are here and I'm going to have a good time,” says Fallenius. “Expect a lot of special edits of tracks, mash-ups and maybe road testing a couple of my new tracks tonight,” says the artist who's influenced by everyone from Hardwell, Eric Prydz to Morgan Page. A can't miss for the biggest trance family aficionados.
