Had Your Weedies Today?: Five Favorite Pot Recipes

With a lot of us going green today, wouldn't it have just made more sense to go ahead and have Earth Day on the 20th? Of course, it depends on which context of the phrase you're using.

But hey, if you're feeling prematurely eco-friendly, why not use both simultaneously–rather than contribute to the big hash cloud hanging over OC today, go smokeless and make some edibles. It's a good hands-on way to get into the 4/20 spirit, especially if you can't or don't want to smoke. And if you haven't tried edibles before, I couldn't think of a better day to do so. After the jump: We've gathered five fave pot recipes. Anyways, er, happy baking!

1. Bud Butter

An easy way to make edibles is to mix the weed in something you already cook with. Since THC is fat soluble and not water soluble, and since it's already used in a lot of our cooking anyway, the popular choice is butter. Once done, you can use bud butter the same way you use regular butter. Wake and bake with bud butter on toast or pancakes. Make cannabis cookies for your friends. Late night mac and cheese. Use your imagination!

Ingredients:
1 lb. butter
Half-oz. marijuana, ground as finely as possible

Directions:

Just melt the butter until it's simmering. Add the bud and let it simmer for 30 minutes, or until it turns green (be sure to stir it every once in a while). Then put it through a strainer to remove the bits of marijuana and put your butter in the fridge until it gets hard. Simple.

2. Weed Tea

Guess what–marijuana is an herb! Just like the stuff in your tea bags.

Ingredients:
Hot water and bud (4:1 ratio)
Actual tea bags, honey, warm milk and weed butter would help, too.

Directions:

Simmer the marijuana in boiling water for about 15 minutes. Add the tea bags, milk and honey, then boil for another 10 minutes or so. You could finish here, but the effects may not be as good as one might expect. Add a small spoonful of weed butter and mix it up to be certain. It won't taste great, but you'll forget about that soon after.

3. Firecrackers
Summer's just around the corner, but why wait for Fourth of July for a little firecrackers? With these firecrackers, you can still stare at the night sky as long as you like–without even having to worry about blowing off your hand.

Ingredients:
A box of graham crackers
Finely ground bud (about 0.5 g per person)
Nutella

Directions: Spread nutella liberally over two graham crackers, being careful not to spread too close to the edges, then sprinkle the ground bud over one of them. Put the two crackers together with the nutella and weed in the middle to make a sort of sandwich. That makes one firecracker. You should probably make two firecrackers per person. Now use aluminum foil to double wrap each firecracker, making sure it's airtight (so your oven doesn't smoke up all your weed without you). Put your firecrackers in the oven at 320 degrees (that's three twenty, smart-ass) for 22 minutes. Don't overbake or they won't be good! Remove the firecrackers and wait for them to cool before you eat them.

(As a side note, these do not smell like weed as they are baking, but rather muffins. Completely landlord-safe! Also, alternatively, you could use peanut butter instead of nutella, but make sure it's all-natural [i.e. does not have hydrogenated oils].)

4. Marijuana Milkshake

Milk is plenty compatible with weed, so it should come as a no-brainer (so to speak) that ice cream and whip cream would be, as well. Or wait! All three!

Ingredients:

2 cups vanilla ice cream
1 cup whole milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 g bud
Whatever else you want

Directions:
If practical, chop up the weed as finely as possible and let it sit overnight in milk. Then after that–dude, it's a milkshake. Throw it all in a blender.

5. Pot Pesto

And who says pot can't be classy? Treat your friends to a fancy Italian dinner with a nice bottle of Chianti. With those milkshakes for dessert, of course.

Ingredients:
2 cups basil leaves
2 tbsp peanut butter
2 crushed cloves garlic
Half-cup olive oil
Half-cup grated parmesan cheese
1/8 of bud

Directions:
Simmer the bud in the olive oil for half an hour, then blend everything together until it's relatively smooth. Add some salt or pepper if you want. Spread it over pasta or pizza.

Hey! You should be proud of yourself: You tried something new this year while
keeping it eco-friendly! Good job, you. Just keep in mind that the
medicinal effects will occur differently for different people. It could
be half an hour later, it could be a few hours later. In any case,
hopefully all this should be enough to keep you full for the day. But,
you know, it's probably good to have a few extra munchies on hand,
should you, I don't know, still feel hungry or something. Just in case.
