Ahhh . . . awards season is upon us. The Golden Globes, everyone's favorite Hollywood drunk self-celebration, happened in Beverly Hills last night, and the music side of film received its share of accolades. The two categories were Best Original Song, Motion Picture and Best Original Score, Motion Picture. Award hog Diane Warren took home the Best Song statuette for “You Haven't Seen the Last of Me” from the Cher-and-Christina Aguilera-starring musical debacle Burlesque. Sadly, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) snubbed composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater's lovely “I See the Light” from Tangled.

The HFPA demonstrated some level of hipness, at least compared to the Grammys' National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the Oscars' Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor and English collaborator Atticus Ross won the Best Original Score award for their work on The Social Network.
Reznor's NIN material has been up and down in recent years, but the compositions for the project worked beautifully, lending a downbeat-but-cutting-edge vibe to a splendidly made film. It was a bit of an upset, too; many insiders pegged Hans Zimmer's excellent Inception score as the one to beat, even though that film has not earned nearly as much awards buzz. This should set up a serious two-picture dogfight for the Oscars next month. We'll update when the official Academy nominees are announced.
