Gidget: The Accidental Icon

Remember Gidget, the cute little surfer girl played by Sally Field that we all came to love on Nick at Nite? Or the movie of the same name starring Sandra Dee that occasionally plays at seaside theaters? She was a real person. In fact, Gidget, aka Kathy Kohner-Zuckerman, single-handedly changed the world of surfing and inspired generations of surfer girls all over the world. Placing seventh among the most influential surfers of all time according to Surfer Magazine, she still hits the waves for charity benefits, even in her 60s. This hour-long documentary dedicated to the surfing icon will premier at the Newport Beach Film Festival this week, and will take an in-depth look at how one feisty teenager introduced the world to the modern sport of surfing. Plus, rumor has it that Gidget herself will attend the screening.
Gidget: The Accidental Icon at the Newport Beach Film Festival, Edwards Island Cinemas, 999 Newport Center Dr., Newport Beach, (949) 640-1218; www.newportbeachfilmfest.com. 4 p.m. $12.
