Gandhi

Hibbleton Gallery owner Jesse La Tour knows that cinema isn’t just about corporate profiteering off of audiences who pine for gore flicks or CGI-gaming explosions – it’s also, and most importantly, an art form that can expand our knowledge about the world and increase our compassion for one another. In his weekly film screening series, he and co-host Steve Elkins have presented a wide range of films over the past year that do just that, and this month, the duo focus on the films of India, or with Indian subject matter. The most well-known of these, at least to American audiences, is 1982’s Best Picture winner, Gandhi, starring Ben Kingsley and directed by Sir Richard Attenborough (both of whom also won Oscars that year). Beginning with Gandhi’s assassination and traveling backward 55 years to a life-changing event in 1893 when the future leader was only 24, this heralded classic is a splendid introduction to the man who most people only know these days via Facebook memes. There’s much more, of course, and this cinematic trip through history promises to enrich your mind, and give you much better Gandhi quotes, as well.
