Freaked-Out Guitar Abuse

Thank God they still make kids like this. Just when we think years of suburban eugenics have bred teenage mutants into obsolescence or Prozac complacency, something like the Flying Saucers goes streaking across the sky. This little nipper is a bristly ball of anachronistic, acne-riddled, rock N roll fucked-up-ed-ness that shoulda lurched out of Cleveland circa 1979 (some serious Pagans worship here, sprinkled with Cramps-like creepitude) or Frisco circa 1996 (Rip Off Records, your prodigal sons have returned). Instead, it's somehow from ugly-boring-old here. Yeah, there are painful spots: we love the sandpaper-and-snot recording, but your lame radio-listening ass wouldn't be able to handle it, and poppy pisstakes like “Chairman Mao and Me” and “C-U-N-10-S-E” fizzle out fast. But between impeccable and impressive taste in mostly blazing covers—Love, the Seeds, Screamin' Jay Hawkins—and the flashes of freaked-out guitar abuse that start to pile up by disc's end, the Flying Saucers could be the vanguard of the alien invasion we've been waiting for so long (give us more spastic trashers like “Woah! A Blind Guy!” and “Zombies in the Graveyard” and we'll keep watching the skies, okay?). You kids are fucked-up—we like that.
