Five Awesome Disney Songs to Karaoke To

You don't have to be a cast member of “Glee” to enjoy occasionally bursting into song.  We've all uttered, “Ga-Ga, Oo lala,” at least once in the past 12 months, whether or not it was against our will. But when it comes to pumping out catchy-as-hell hooks, epic melodies and lyrics able to elicit visceral emotion from a stone, no other icon does it better than Disney. There's just something about those tunes that lures out the Mouseketeer in all of us and if we grab a mic, maybe–just maybe–we can expect someone to harmonize along with us or even dance in unison. This is why we've put together a short list of our favorite Disney songs to karaoke to.
See what made the list and compare your faves after the jump!

5. “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” – The Lion King

This song may seem a little out of place as a crowd pleaser due to its mellow tempo and generally fruity nature, but no one lays it down like Elton. Yeah, it's not quite as upbeat or boisterous as “Hakunah Matata,” but nothing gets a drunken crowd to lock arms and start swaying faster than singing about “the love.” It's also office friendly, so you don't have to worry about incurring any snarky commentary the following Monday from that douchebag in Sales. Picking this song also guarantees you'll have the whole room working as your backup during that beast of a chorus.

4. “Breaking Free” – High School Musical
If you've so much as ventured within earshot of a conversation in which one or more parties is a pre-pubescent to tween-aged girl, chances are you're fully aware of High School Musical. We have our reservations about this pop culture behemoth (especially while dealing with the classics), but there's just something about this song in particular that makes us want to close our eyes and pretend that the gay BFF completing our duet is really that hunky-hunk Zac Efron boy. While the music and lyrics may be pretty half-assed in comparison to the OG titles sitting in the Disney Vault, this breakaway pop hit will make the girls at any bat mitzvah go apeshit crazy. If you've got absolutely no idea what we're talking about, then we're sorry you're so old.

3. “Be Prepared” – The Lion King
We'll admit that the selection of songs on this list are pretty female-biased, but how much gender-neutrality can you really expect from a bunch of songs cranked out by gay Broadway composers and kooky pop stars? Though, if there is one Disney song that is just supersaturated with testosterone, it's “Be Prepared.” Made for the manliest of men to rock out to, this song has everything from clever insults, an arsenal of razor-sharp puns and even a plot for staging a coup d'etat. While it may not seem like the most obvious karaoke choice, if performed with ample amounts of chutzpah in a baritone that does justice to Jeremy Irons, this song will make you a karaoke legend. You will know when you've perfected your delivery when any children that happen to be in the room burst into tears out of sheer terror.

2. “Part of Your World” – The Little Mermaid
When the notes of this song come floating out of the karaoke machine, the world dims and there are only two things in existence: You and your microphone. The longing, the melodrama, the passion–what is there not to love? Yeah, it's a tad ironic that the anthem for angsty teen girls everywhere was written by two homosexual men, but upon deeper reflection, perhaps it makes perfect sense. As the go-to inspirational ballad for every woman, there is no way this song is ever skipped at any office party, karaoke bar, or singles mixer. Its strength is such that karaoke alone can no longer contain it and, rather than just belting it out at the traditional Christmas party, women across the world have resorted to uploading videos of themselves singing along to midi versions of it on Youtube.

1. “A Whole New World” – Aladdin
You can spend hours scouring the entire catalogue of obscure Disney music, but the undisputed Disney karaoke song will always be “A Whole New World.” Not only are Aladdin and Jasmine our favorite ethnic couple, but, damn, do those two know how to execute a sexy duet! All that singing about turning over sideways and under really gets us jonesing for a magic carpet ride. But all sexual innuendos aside, here's a little secret for the boys out there: It's a well-known fact that the 12-year-old in all women still has a raging crush on Aladdin, so if you step and sing this song with a partner, you're basically guaranteed to get yourself some ass (with possible freakiness if you can harmonize too). Just don't sing it by yourself you might end up looking a lot like this guy, only without the crazy mad skills.
