THE KILLERS
This semester, the Friday Film Forum salutes films in which great film artists made their debuts or farewells. Burt Lancaster makes his debut in the noirish thriller The Killers, about hitmen and the people who investigate their crimes. The film also features Ava Gardner and was nominated for four Oscars. Moulin Rouge.This hyperkinetic musical was a little too overdone for my taste when I saw it on the big screen, but with time, I've grown to appreciate what director Baz Luhrmann was going for. Mixing 20th century pop music with a plot line lifted from opera and featuring real-life figures such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Moulin Rouge is a film oversaturated with color and emotion and definitely not for the cynical. Rocky Horror Picture Show.Some do Pilates, some do “The Time Warp.” It's okay, boys, put on some makeup and look fabulous—a lot of girls are into ambiguous sexuality. Who Killed the Electric Car?If you didn't see it during its theater debut last year, come check out this documentary that looks into the disappearance of the EV1, the electric car that would have put the hybrid to shame and petroleum dealers in the poorhouse. After seeing this film, you may well begin to have sympathy for those ecoterrorists who firebomb Hummer dealerships. Whether man-made global climate change is real or not (it is, by the way), I think we can all agree that spending upwards of $50 at the pump kind of stinks. If we don't give a damn about the world our kids will inherit (we don't, by the way), we at least care about our pocketbooks. Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, 117 N.
