Disney has chosen commercial director Brian Beletic to helm a live action film inspired by the Matterhorn Bobsleds, a roller coaster attraction that first debuted in Disneyland in 1959. As of right now, the film is being called the “Untitled Explorers Project.”
The film will be Beletic's first gig as a feature-length director. Previously, he directed numerous commercials including spots for Nike and music videos for bands like The Black Eyed Peas.
Beletic marks the third commercial director in recent years that Disney has entrusted with a feature-length project; Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) and James Bobin (The Muppets) were the previous two.
The film's log line is as follows: a small group of young, super adventure/explorers, each with a specific skill set, are brought to the remote backcountry of the Pennine Alps under various guises for a trek across one of the planet's remaining untouched realms. They do this with extreme skiing, snowboarding and mountaineering.
But what about the Yeti?!? How can you have a movie based on the Matterhorn without the Yeti?!?
Well, according to the ride's entry on Wikipedia, the film will be “a thrilling, fast-paced movie centering on five young adventure seekers who, for mysterious reasons, are called to the top of the mountain and encounter a Yeti on the journey down.”
We'll see how it progresses, folks. My guess? It will fall somewhere between the awesomeness of the Pirates franchise and the lameness of The Country Bears. Or 2000's Mission to Mars or 1997's made-for-TV “gem” Tower of Terror.
Here's hoping that Steve Guttenberg doesn't make a cameo.
