Cattywampus

Cattywampus, writer-director Robert Cucuzza’s revamped version of August Strindberg’s 1888 play Miss Julie, deals with the same struggles of power, sex and class that plagued the title character, an aristocrat who falls for one of her family’s servants, a footman named Jean. But instead of taking place in the estate of a Swedish Count, Cucuzza moves the story to a car dealership in Pittsburgh. When “modern day” Julie seduces one of the car detailers, a battle of the sexes quickly ensues, leaving her dreams of running away with him to Florida in the damage zone. Cucuzza’s rewrite gives the play new life and fills a tragic story with some much-needed comedy.
