Although “The Joker,” “Rock’n Me,” and “Fly Like An Eagle” get the most play on classic-rock radio, those are mere gateway songs into the laidback mastery of Steve Miller, whose eponymous band has spanned four decades now. There’s also the eerie precision and extraterrestrial shimmer of “Serenade,” the unfolding ambience of “Wild Mountain Honey,” and the country nostalgia of “Dance, Dance, Dance.” Newcomers should start with Fly Like An Eagle in one hand—the album cover says it all—and any of the band’s greatest-hits compilations in the other. Cheesy? Oh yeah. Miller’s got a rainbow-winged horse for a logo, after all. But that only heightens his slick, career-long mingling of science-fiction and fantasy, blues and rock, past and future.
