Get Board
'Honesty Is the New Black'

What is it with action-sports companies getting all artsy-fartsy on us these days?

Presented by the Californian Automaton Super Snowboard Co., “Honesty Is the New Black” at the ARTery inside the Lab anti-mall features many up-and-coming artists who have skillfully addressed the all-too-relatable themes of honesty and trust, each in their own way and through various media. Automaton has always featured hip, lowbrow art and scribblings on the undersides of its boards, so this is a chance for everyone from old fans to new admirers to catch these works in person.

“Honesty Is the New Black” at the ARTery, the Lab, 2930 Bristol St., Costa Mesa; www.thelab.com. Open Mon.-Sat., 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sun., 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Hooray for Bipartisanship!
Erwin Chemerinsky

Okay, so it's a bit of a drive, but anyone curious about the man who's about to become the founding dean of the UC Irvine Law School—the “controversial” Duke University law-school dean whom UCI Chancellor Michael Drake hired and then unhired and then hired again—might want to stop by when Erwin Chemerinsky speaks at Claremont McKenna College on Monday. The famous constitutional-law scholar and former USC professor helped write LA's city charter and authored four books, including Interpreting the Constitution(1987) andConstitutional Law(2001). He's been an outspoken defender of civil liberties and an opponent of the death penalty, which may have had something to do with why Drake got cold feet after originally offering Chemerinsky a job earlier this year. But when Drake suddenly told Chemerinsky he didn't need to bother coming out to Irvine next June, both conservative and liberal scholars rallied to his defense, and Drake nearly lost his job in the ensuing brouhaha. The college website doesn't say what Chemerinsky's talking about, but his presence alone guarantees a great opportunity for the public to pick his brain.

Erwin Chemerinsky at Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, Claremont McKenna College, 500 E. Ninth St., Claremont, (909) 621-8000; www.claremontmckenna.edu/mmca/. Mon., 6:45 p.m. Call for cost.
