La Palma Days

Heavyweight champ Sonny Liston’s verdict after seeing the Beatles in the ‘60s? “My dog plays the drums better than that kid with the big nose.” How it should be done will be demonstrated this weekend in La Palma. Along with 28 school bands, Camp Pendleton’s First Marine Corps Band, the Miss La Palma Pageant, cuisine and products from 40 vendors, a towering fiberglass slide, pony rides and speed pitch, there’s a “Just Show Up and Do It” freestyle percussion contest for band members. Our recommendation to the kids? Dig out your daddy’s Best of the Who CD, get inspired by “Magic Bus” at wall-shattering volume, and go unleash the havoc of your inner Keith Moon. La Palma may not forgive you, but it will remember you.
