In 2001, Donnie Darko was released in theaters. However, nobody had heard of it and the film promptly withered and died. A few months later, Darko came out on DVD and immediately garnered a huge, cultish fan base. The success of which prompted director Richard Kelly to go back and create a highly anticipated “Director’s Cut” because, though fans loved the movie, the Byzantine plotlines left more than a few people scratching their heads. The more viewer-friendly version runs 20 minutes longer, boasts a mostly-new soundtrack and reads like a cinematic account of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Time Travel. So, if you’re a discerning critic who enjoys understanding the films you’re watching, this is the version for you.
