Bodas de Sangre

This 1938 film of the Federico Garcia Lorca play Blood Wedding stars Margarita Xirgu in the story of a family vendetta and a bride who runs away with the son of the enemy. Themes of deception, fate, nature and the cycle of life fill this third act of what critics consider Lorca’s tragic “trilogy of the Spanish earth,” that also includes Yerma and The House of Bernarda Alaba (although Lorca did not choose to include the latter work). Presented by the Long Beach Opera, this vintage art film event opens with a lecture by LBO director Andreas Mitisek and mimosas for all, so do your Sunday communion on the cinematic side this weekend.
