Blue Velvet

Director David Lynch’s 1986 twisty, nightmarish noir earned him an Oscar nomination and cemented him into the public consciousness as one brilliant, bizarre cat. Bringing to the screen a cast of relative newcomers—Hollywood legend heiresses Isabella Rossellini and Laura Dern, and soon-to-be Twin Peaks-ed Kyle MacLachlan—and pitting them against the poster boy for bad behavior, Dennis Hopper, this warped romp through suburbia and its dark underbelly is heavy on atmosphere and creepy deeds, all set off by a severed ear and extinguished by a few long drags off an oxygen tank. You’ll never think of the word “mommy” the same way again.
