The realm of competitive beer drinking is hotly contested. Guzzlers and beer pongers from all over the world brag about their skills: the ability to chug das boot, to sink a ping-pong ball into a cup with blurred vision, or to flip a cup so perfectly it sticks like a golf ball on the green. But all across the globe, there is one event—some call it the Madison Square Garden of competitive drinking—true craftsmen or draftsmen hold above all else: Birch Street Beer League. Wednesdays at the Birch Street Bar, brave competitors gather for a night of “serious” drinking with an assortment of games that challenge even the master. They have beer pong tournaments, flip cup, a das boot chugging challenge, speed quarters, beer baseball, and other variations on games created by anonymous angels of cervesa.
