Taking their inspiration from concept albums like The Who’s Tommy and rock musicals Rocky Horror Picture Show and Jesus Christ Superstar, pop punkers Green Day produced their own rock opera American Idiot in 2004 and sent it to Broadway six years later. Following the twisted lives of three bros (and a hot chick who doesn’t even merit an actual name—edgy!) who get druggy, maimed and repeatedly angry and depressed may not sound, at first listen, like a gay olde tyme, but really, you’re just there to hear “Holiday” done up all loud and gnarly with synchronized dance steps, right? Right.
