Your Guide to Sept. 20 Climate Strikes in Orange County

Because they have so much to lose from our global climate catastrophe, thousands of students around the world have taken to protest. Who can blame them? The Trump Administration is especially stupid in this regard, choosing to deny even the most basic facts of science simply to give big industry and fossil fuel industries ever greater profits. Greta Thunberg, 16, of Sweden is probably the most famous student who’s fed up with such selfishness, and she’s been ditching school on Fridays since August 2018 to hold vigil in front of the Swedish parliament, calling on world governments to pay more attention to pressing climate needs.

On Friday, Sept. 20, many thousands more students–and anyone else who wants to join them–will carry out Climate Strikes across the country. Given the complete contempt the Trump Administration and congressional Republicans hold for all things climate change, these strikes are wonderful reminders that our youth often see the world clearer than the doddering patriarchy that still holds power in Washington.

“Never did my introverted self think I would organize something like this, especially being told not to cause any trouble growing up,” said UC Irvine student Patricia Haigh in a Sept. 18 news release from activists organizing the Irvine Climate Strike. “But I’ve realized it’s so important to prevent environmental disaster while we still can!”

Patty Yoo, the Vice Chair of the Climate Reality Project‘s OC Chapter and advisory board member of Climate Action Campaign, assisted Haigh in organizing the Climate Strike in Irvine.

“Activists, concerned citizens and scientists have been told for years that we are alarmists,” Yoo said in the news release. “However, this year, we have seen an alarming number of events where climate change was a major contributing factor. We cannot continue business as usual and the time for alarm and bold action is now. I’m striking for my kids’ future and calling on our elected officials to act with urgency.”

    1. Joe MommaHoly shit dude, literally someone who is on your side and trying to fight for the same cause as you doesn’t deserve the blame you’re giving her. Chill out man. The point is to address the problem and not to shift blame to others.

  1. Hum. “global climate catastrophe.” Really. Suppose we had such a catastrophe, how do these people propose to solve it? They demand solutions, but bring none. Renewables? Those have a terrible effect on the environment-all that is, except the one they don’t want: nuclear. Wind and solar butcher and roast birds by the flock and hydroelectric interrupts rivers, just to name a few. Additionally, there’s the rare earth that has to be mined and also disposed of eventually. Electric cars now are a stupid idea, as most all electricity comes from non-renewable sources, not even counting the so called renewables that are damaging to the environment. If the waters were to rise from global warming, people wouldn’t die. Such a change would be gradual. People would simply move further inland, come up with good ideas, implement them, and eventually achieve equilibrium. Before people try to fix things, they really ought to study them and the associated exigencies.
