William Douglas Agopian, who copped to diverting
more than $700,000 in public funds for his own use when he served as as chief business officer with the Lynwood Unified School
District, was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison.
The Santa Ana 61-year-old pleaded guilty in LA Superior Court Sept. 4 to
one felony count each of misappropriation of public funds and filing a
false tax return.

Agopian could have shaved three years off his sentence had he agreed to repay the school district $700,000 and pay $121,000 to the state's Franchise Tax
Board, the district attorney's office said last September.
He'd stolen funds from an account the district set up for a student sister city trip to Mexico and spent the booty on hotel rooms, his tax bills, hot tub equipment and tickets for sporting events.
