Watch 'Melali: The Drifter Sessions' for Free, with Rob Machado and His Band

The wanderlust deep in the hearts of surfers–going anywhere for the “perfect” wave–and the inevitable spirtual and intellectual growth that results from that travel, was the focus of Surfer Hall of Fame inductee (twice!), philanthropist and enviromentalist Rob Machado's 2009 film The Drifter, directed by Taylor Steele.

The Drifter follows Machado around Indonesia as the icon surfed and got to know the locals. Several of Machado's pro surfer friends–including Kelly Slater, Dan Malloy, Shane Dorian and Dane Reynolds, among others–came to Indonesia to see, hang out and hang ten with him, resulting in just too damn much footage to cram into one movie.

The sequel to that documentary, the 35-minute Melali: The Drifter Sessions, featuring all of those surf sessions, gets its Orange County premiere screening this Friday night courtesy of the kind folks at Hurley.

What sets this screening apart from your standard surf film is that Machado and his band, the Drifter Sessions, will be providing a live rock score for the film within the intimate setting of the Hurley HQ. Here's a video of Machado talking about the the project that includes some fairly stunning footage:

Since the days of silent films and The Mighty Wurlitzer are essentially behind us, here's a great chance to see what that experience is like. See a cool film for free, hear live music for free, shake the hand of a sports icon for free and get some free food and drinks in the bargain.

Melali: The Drifter Sessions plays at Hurley Headquarters, 945 Placentia Blvd., Costa Mesa. at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome and admission is free.
